This piece is made from sustainable materials that were found, reclaimed, or grown ourselves near to where we live in West Cork, Ireland. We don’t buy exotic woods from far-flung places, we use the wood that we can harvest and regrow ourselves in healthy, highly diverse, and well-functioning local ecosystems.

Functional and simple design mixed with ancient hand carving techniques allow our wooden wares to be both lightweight and incredibly strong at the same time. Over ten years in design has given Nick, our maker, a strong belief in always allowing the wood to speak for itself.

With each piece he examines and follows the grain as he works, keeping the unique bends and burls rather than tossing them out like most makers would. This means you receive a stronger and more beautiful item than you would from someone who just carves from straight-grained blanks. It also means that every piece is entirely unique, so what you see in the photo is exactly what you will receive in the mail.

Thank you, Nick.. the beautifully shaped coffee scoop is in daily use in our family kitchen. It was my great good fortune that you happened to be in my area when I ordered, so personal delivery from the maker himself was the highlight of my day!

How it was made

We strive to create closed-loop economies in our lives and in our business, so instead of throwing away the wood that is tough to work with, we take chances that other makers won't, and allow the unique bends and burls to become parts of our work that you will fall in love with.

You end up with a piece of work that no one else will ever have—no two pieces we make will ever be the same—and we get the joy and satisfaction of making something that will last a lifetime from wood that otherwise would have been left to turn back into soil.

Using only a hatchet, a few knives, and a vice, each piece of wood is split and carved while allowing the curves and knots of the wood to tell us what the wood would like to become. We don't keep sketches or draw our work on the wood before we start. Instead, we look at the grain and begin to work a rough shape out of the wood with an antique, Victorian hatchet.

We then, in the case of our spoons, shape a bowl using a hook knife and finish the back of the bowl and handle with a straight knife, leaving the faceting effect that comes from each stroke of the knife.

Our pieces are finished by soaking them in hot water, then wet sanding them down to a soft, matte finish. They are left to dry overnight, then coated with a food-safe linseed oil and beeswax mixture and left to soak overnight again, letting the oils penetrate and embed into the grain of the wood. We polish them the next morning, but never to a shine, because we believe that a piece of art should reflect the materials it is made from, and trees are not naturally shiny, straight, or perfect.

100% recycled, recyclable, and home compostable packaging
We believe that plastic and fossil fuels are ruining our global environment, so we are doing everything we can to reduce our impact. We ship our items in 100% recycled padded paper mailers that can be either reused, home composted, or 100% recycled again.

We realize that fossil fuel use is necessary (at the moment) for an online business like ours to ship our products to our customers, but we are working hard to find shipping companies that are also dedicated to reducing their impact on the environment, and also hope to become a 100% local business, to sell only to customers within a certain distance from where we live so that we don't have to rely on shipping companies, cars, or aircraft to get our work to where it needs to go.
